Super Bowl 15 was an American football game played on January 25, 1981 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana to decide the National Football League (NFL) champion following the 1980 regular season. The American Football Conference (AFC) Oakland Raiders (15–5) demolished the National Football Conference (NFC) champion Philadelphia Eagles (14–5), 27–10, to become the first wild card playoff team to ever win a Super Bowl.
The Raiders jumped out to a 14 to nothing lead in the first quarter, and the Eagles never recovered. Oakland quarterback Jim Plunkett was the Super Bowl MVP, completing 13 of 21 passes for 261 yards and throwing three touchdowns, while also rushing for 9 yards. Plunkett would only be the second Heisman Trophy winner to win Super Bowl MVP. Super Bowl 15 was the climax of Plunkett’s revival as an NFL quarterback. The 1970 Heisman Trophy winner was summed by the New England Patriots and was later named the 1971 NFL Rookie of the Year. But Plunkett played though 5 losing seasons with the Patriots and 2 rough seasons with the San Francisco 49ers before being released as a free agent just before the 1978 season. What a story for the Super Bowl 15 MVP.
